Balancing Life and Work

“To me, having more time with my family is more valuable than the money.”

Those words, from Inventory Analyst Gwen Tomlin in our Airdrie Service Centre, sum up the feelings of many employees today. TransCanada, which has always offered flexibility in working arrangements, went even farther in 2008 to ensure that our employees are able to balance their personal and professional lives.

For example, we introduced a new “seasonal employment” option that allows permanent employees to reduce their schedule of work at traditionally slow times of the year. The option is particularly appealing to employees easing into retirement.

This sort of initiative, together with part-time employment, job-sharing and flexible hours of work options, means that TransCanada employees are better able to juggle the many demands on them while we benefit from their clear focus at work. This flexibility also helps us retain many valuable employees who might otherwise need to reconsider their career options. About three per cent of our employees now work part-time or in a job sharing arrangement.
