Environmental stewardship is integral to all aspects of our business. We recognize the close relationship between the physical environment and the people, plants and animals that rely on it. Our plans and activities always consider the physical and social environment in which we conduct our business. We take a life cycle approach to environmental protection, ensuring our facilities and operations are designed to avoid impacts where possible, and to minimize or mitigate effects where avoidance is not possible.

Our key areas of focus include:

• Spills management;
• Management of legacy issues;
• Cultural and historical resources; and
• Technology management, research and development.

In 2008, our environmental professionals in Canada and the United States addressed environmental issues effectively at both the corporate and local level. Here are some of their major accomplishments:

• We planned, permitted and are constructing numerous pipeline and power facilities, including major projects such as:
• Kibby Wind Farm;
• Coolidge Power Generation Facility;
• Keystone Oil Pipeline;
• North Central Corridor Pipeline; and
• Bison Pipeline.

We also developed or updated many of our environmental procedures to ensure on-going compliance and conducted numerous Environmental Site Assessments to investigate legacy contamination issues at TransCanada facility sites.
