Gas Storage
Our regulated gas storage business, ANR Storage Company, serves our Pipelines division and provides firm and interruptible natural gas storage services to customers on our Great Lakes Gas Transmission and ANR Pipeline systems.
TransCanada has become one of the largest natural gas storage providers in Western Canada. With the completion of our Edson facility in December 2006, TransCanada now owns or controls more than 130 billion cubic feet (Bcf), approximately one-third of the storage capacity in Alberta. TransCanada markets natural gas storage and related services to a broad range of customers. The company also owns 60 per cent of CrossAlta Gas Storage & Services Ltd., which operates a 68 Bcf storage facility near Crossfield, Alberta. CrossAlta continues to market its own storage capacity. TransCanada believes market fundamentals for natural gas storage are strong and the imbalance in North American natural gas supply and demand has increased demand for storage service. Alberta based storage will continue to serve market needs and could play an important role should Northern gas be connected to North American markets.
TransCanada's non-regulated gas storage business is operated independently from its ANR Storage Company.
TransCanada offers a broad range of storage alternatives to customers. TransCanada's marketing team can align products to meet specific customer needs. Our typical services include:
TransCanada uses industry standard practices to contract for gas storage and services. The first step to entering a storage contract involves execution of both a "Master Storage Agreement" and a "Services Contract". The second step is a credit review to ensure financial assurances are adequate. With documentation and credit in place, a confirmation is generated for each agreed upon gas storage or service transaction. For more information on contracting for service with TransCanada, please contact one of TransCanada's marketing representatives.
The Edson storage operation is an underground natural gas storage facility consisting of a single depleted reservoir, the Viking "D" pool , a central processing facility and associated pipeline gathering system. The plant is located approximately 35 km northwest of Edson, Alberta. The Viking "D" pool has produced approximately two billion cubic meters of gas over its productive life from the 1980's up to early 2004. The Edson Facility is connected to the NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) Grande Prairie mainline.
The central processing facility is required to compress the gas into the reservoir for storage and to ensure sales gas quality specifications are met during the withdrawal cycle for delivery to the NGTL transmission system. The central processing facility is capable of handling a maximum of 20,530 103m3/d (725 MMcfd) of natural gas onboth injection and withdrawal.
The central processing facility is comprised of coolers, pressure control, separation, filtration, compression, dehydration and hydrocarbon dew point control processing equipment. There are storage tanks for produced water and condensate.
Approximately 19 megawatts (25,000 horsepower) of compression is required consisting of five reciprocating units driven by electric motors. During injection and withdrawal cycles, gas processed by the plant is metered at a bi-directional custody transfer meter station adjacent to the plant.
The well site facilities include a flow control valve, bi-directional metering and an emergency shut down valve. The central control system remotely monitors the wells and has the ability to shut down each well in the event of an emergency or upset.
The facility has a gathering system of pipelines to each well site. The system consists of approximately 15 km of 406.4 mm (16 inch) outside diameter (OD) steel pipeline connecting the wells to the central gas facility. The pipelines are designed and licensed to a maximum operating pressure of 22,064 kPa (3,200 psi).
