Non-regulated Gas Storage
Non-regulated Gas Storage
TransCanada has become one of the largest natural gas storage providers in Western Canada. With the completion of our Edson facility, TransCanada now owns or controls more than 130 Bcf, approximately one-third of the storage capacity in Alberta. TransCanada markets natural gas storage and related services to a broad range of customers. The company also owns 60 per cent of CrossAlta Gas Storage & Services Ltd., which operates a 50 Bcf storage facility near Crossfield, Alberta. CrossAlta continues to market its own storage capacity.
TransCanada believes market fundamentals for natural gas storage are strong. The additional gas storage capacity will help balance seasonal and short-term supply and demand, and provide flexibility to the supply of natural gas to Alberta and North America. The imbalance in North American natural gas supply and demand has increased demand for storage service. Alberta-based storage will continue to serve market needs and could play an important role should Northern gas be connected to North American markets.
TransCanada's non-regulated gas storage business is operated independently from its regulated natural gas transmission business and ANR Storage Company, a regulated natural gas storage business serving customers on TransCanada's Great Lakes Gas Transmission and ANR Pipeline systems.
Services Description
Natural Gas Storage
TransCanada offers a broad range of storage alternatives to customers. Injection and withdrawal profiles are offered on either a curve or ratchet basis. Typical recycle parameters are in the range of 1.4 – 1.7 times (108 – 89 days), however other products can also be structured. Contract terms can range from 1 – 20 years. TransCanada's marketing team can align products to meet specific customer needs.
Natural Gas Services
In addition to term gas storage contracts, TransCanada actively manages their storage assets to take advantage of market opportunities and meet unique customer needs. Market volatility frequently creates arbitrage opportunities and TransCanada offers "Market Centre" activities to capture these short term price movements. Market Centre products consist of short-term deliver-redeliver contracts, parking, peak-day supply and other related services.
Gas Storage Contracts
TransCanada uses industry standard practices to contract for gas storage and services. The first step to entering a storage contract involves execution of both a "Master Storage Agreement" and a "Services Contract". The second step is a credit review to ensure financial assurances are adequate. With documentation and credit in place, a confirmation is generated for each agreed upon gas storage or service transaction. For more information on contracting for service with TransCanada, please contact one of TransCanada's marketing representatives.
