TransCanada received Arizona Corporation Commission approval to build and operate a 575 megawatt (MW) simple-cycle natural gas-fired peaking power generation station in Coolidge, Arizona. The generating station, anticipated to be in-service by the summer of 2011, is designed to provide a quick response to “peak” power demands. It would also provide reserve capacity and the ability to add power quickly to support power reliability.

TransCanada has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Phoenix, Arizona-based utility Salt River Project to secure 100 per cent of the output from TransCanada’s planned Coolidge Generation Station.

The generating station's address is:

859 E. Randolph Rd.
Coolidge, AZ 85228

TIMELINE

2009-2011

  • Begin construction
  • Ongoing communication/consultation with stakeholders throughout construction process
  • Complete construction
  • Commission station
  • The proposed in-service date is May 2011

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

TransCanada goes to great lengths to ensure our facilities are designed, constructed and operated to minimize environmental impacts. We develop, implement and continually refine environmental policies and programs that allow us to not only comply with government regulations, but lead our industry.

The Coolidge Generating Station was designed for low environmental impact.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

TransCanada has undertaken extensive consultation with local stakeholders to introduce ourselves, share information and gather public input. We remain committed to open communication throughout the construction and operation stages of the project. We will start to formally review requests for community support once all our project permits are in place and construction begins. We anticipate permits to be in place by July 2009 and construction to begin in August 2009.

To apply for funding, please visit http://www.transcanada.com/social/connections_investment.html and complete the online application form.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

TransCanada's Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) firm will be responsible for hiring once construction starts in August. The Industrial Company (TIC) anticipates bringing on a hiring coordinator in September/October 2009.

TIC also intends to register with a local labour service beginning in September/October 2009. At this location, interested individuals can drop off their resume or possibly view job postings associated with the project. This service will remain in place for the duration of the project (until April 2011).

If you’re interested in longer-term employment with TransCanada, please visit the careers section of www.transcanada.com and create a candidate profile for future consideration.
