TransCanada and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) have entered into a partnership to develop a power plant called the Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) in Toronto. In December 2002, the partnership began an environmental assessment to verify the viability of developing a 550-megawatt natural gas-fuelled power plant. The project was initiated in response to a Government of Ontario identified need for further development to support the energy requirements of downtown Toronto.

• Sept. 18, 2006: Portlands Energy Centre Signs Accelerated Clean Energy Supply Contract
• Feb. 10, 2006: the Ontario Energy Minister directed the Ontario Power Authority to negotiate a contract to buy the output of the proposed Portlands Energy Centre. Negotiations are underway.
