Bison Extension consolidates in the Pathfinder Project
In 2008 TransCanada proposed a natural gas pipeline project from the U.S. Rockies supply basins to markets in the U.S. Midwest. The proposed Pathfinder Pipeline Project (Pathfinder) was a 673-mile, 36-inch diameter natural gas mainline from Meeker, Colorado to an interconnection with the Northern Border Pipeline System. The pipeline also had a longer term option of extending from Northern Border to an interconnect with the Great Lakes, Viking and TransCanada systems at Emerson Manitoba.
The Pathfinder pipeline was being developed in response to forecast supply growth in the U.S. Rockies gas basins that was anticipated to exceed existing Rockies export transportation capacity in the region as early as 2010.
Developments since the summer of 2008
With the recent change in economic outlook and lower prices for natural gas, drilling operations in the Rockies have declined from levels seen in the first half of 2008, deferring the need for additional pipeline capacity beyond the original Pathfinder time-line. With this change in supply growth, TransCanada has elected to consolidate the Pathfinder Pipeline Project into TransCanada’s Bison Project, and will pursue all future east-bound Rockies developments using the Bison footprint.
