> Simmons Pipeline Acquisition
TransCanada has recently signed an agreement to acquire the pipeline and related assets from the Simmons Group Inc. These assets include 380 km (approximately 240 miles) of pipeline and four compressor units in Northern Alberta with a capacity of approximately 185 mmcfd.

The acquisition is subject to approval by the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB). The Simmons system will become part of TransCanada's Alberta System, one of the largest carriers of natural gas in North America.

Constructed in 1976, the Simmons Pipeline delivers natural gas to the Fort McMurray oil sands area from several connecting receipt points on TransCanada's Alberta System (NGTL), along with production connected directly to the pipeline. Oil sands production requires natural gas supply for hydrogen feedstock, power generation and fuel.

We see the Fort McMurray area as a strategic market. This transaction is important for our expansion plans into this attractive market and at the same time, allows us to defer capital expenditures, benefiting all Alberta System customers.

"With the increased development of oil sands resources, growth in demand for natural gas is expected to continue in the Fort McMurray area," says Don Bell, Sales Manager, Western End-Users and Interconnects. "Once approved, this acquisition will represent the most cost-effective solution for customers requesting gas transmission service into the area."

Current contract holders on the Simmons pipelines will receive the benefits of holding firm service contracts on TransCanada's Alberta System, including access to NOVA Inventory Transfer (NIT), access to other markets, receipt point contract transfers, etc.

Upon filing with the EUB, TransCanada will provide customers with further details regarding the transaction. The filing is expected to occur in the summer of 2003.
