> CGA Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) celebrates its 100th anniversary this year with some exciting plans to mark the occasion. “2007 marks a special year for the association and our members”, said CGA President and Chief Executive Officer, Michael Cleland.  “This anniversary is an opportunity to both reflect on the industry’s contributions to Canadians to date and also look at the role that natural gas will play in Canada’s energy future.”

TransCanada is proud to be a member and supporter of the CGA. The CGA has joined with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) to host a one and a half day executive forum, and Hal Kvisle, TransCanada’s chief executive officer, has been invited to participate in a panel discussion on “Getting the gas to market – exploration, development, infrastructure and investment”. Energy Solutions for the Future will be held June 67, 2007 in Ottawa. “Internationally renowned expert speakers will discuss the role of natural gas in the global economy,” said Cleland. “Responding to community needs and environmental challenges; getting gas to market; and, the policy conditions to ensure investment and high levels of performance to meet society’s expectations for sustainability are among the topics to be discussed.”

Another of the CGA’s anniversary plans include a coffee table book authored by Dr. Tim Krywulak, Ph.D. (history).  This book provides both a chronological account of how the association and Canada’s natural gas utilities have progressed over the past century with photos dating back to the early 1900’s. It connects the industry to the everyday life of Canadians and tells the story of the people, events and developments that impacted not only the industry’s development but our way of life; from the 1830s gas lamps, the 1970s era of cooking with gas, to today’s focus on clean energy. The book was published in March 2007.

Founded in 1907, the CGA is the voice of Canada's natural gas delivery industry. The Association is made up of 130 companies, organizations and individuals who are involved in the delivery of natural gas in Canada and the United States. CGA members are typically local gas distribution companies from coast to coast, transmission companies, related equipment manufacturers, and other service providers. Together, CGA members combine to deliver safe, reliable and environmentally preferred natural gas to more than five million customers in Canada and to major markets in the United States. CGA members employ approximately 15,000 people in Canada and supply the energy needs to 39 per cent of the commercial sector, 48 per cent of the residential sector and 51 per cent of the manufacturing sector.
