TransCanada has been a major sponsor of the Calgary Stampede for many years and this year is no exception as we continue our sponsorship of the Saddle Bronc event at the Stampede rodeo. In the past, support for Stampede initiatives have included sponsoring the Indian Village and Bareback rodeo event.
“The Stampede is a real celebration of community spirit,” says Cheryl Bishop, Community Investment Manager for TransCanada. “We are proud to play an active role in the Calgary community by helping to bring western traditions and values to people across North America.”
Saddle Bronc Basics
The Calgary Stampede Rodeo is now an All-Star Tournament. Twenty of the world's highest-rated rodeo athletes have qualified to compete in each of the six major events – saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and ladies barrel racing. Rhythm is the key to the Saddle Bronc event. The rider moves his feet from the horse’s neck in a full arc toward the back of the saddle in time with the bronc’s action. The cowboy must ride in a saddle built to CPRA specifications with a braided rein connected to the horse’s halter. The cowboy uses this rein for balance. Where a cowboy holds onto the rein is very important. If he takes too short of rein, he will be pulled over the front, too long he may be bucked off the back. The rider will be disqualified for touching any part of the horse or his equipment with his free hand, losing a stirrup or being bucked off before the end of the eight-second ride.
