Steve Clark, Vice-President, Commercial – West for TransCanada, was recently profiled in the June issue of Energy Processing Magazine. In the article Steve had the opportunity to discuss some of the challenges our industry faces. Like most energy companies in Alberta, completing major projects on time and on budget is becoming increasingly challenging. The competition for human resources is becoming fierce and this is not without consequences.
Of particular interest to Steve is addressing the complex social issues that come with trying to resolve the growing competition for human resources – particularly those related to affordable housing and mental health. “We’re asking people to leave their homes and move out West for the chance of a better life and the opportunity to make a good wage,” says Steve. “But finding an affordable to place to live is increasingly challenging and is creating undue stress on individuals and families. This stress can lead to an array of social problems, including mental illness.”
As president of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) Calgary region, Steve has high hopes for a newly launched province wide mental health awareness campaign jointly sponsored by TransCanada and RBC Financial Group. “Research has shown that one in five people will experience a mental illness in their lifetime and we know this issue impacts our employees, our families and people in our communities,” says Steve. “We need to help change the perception of mental health and build a future where our employees and communities are healthier, stronger and more stable.”
The campaign is focused on a five-step plan for better mental health that makes it easy for Albertans to learn more about mental illness and encourages them to take positive action around the issue. The initiative is supported by an advertising campaign and educational booklet which delivers the message that anyone can be at risk of a mental illness. The campaign encourages the public to visit www.mymentalhealth.ca for further information and support.
The website outlines five steps to better mental health and facilitates access to a myriad of local mental health resources across Alberta. The five step plan includes: learn about mental illness, measure your mental health, get help if you need it, take action to make a difference and donate to support local programs and services.
