TransCanada’s non-regulated underground gas storage facilities near Edson, Alberta are taking shape.
Construction continues on the central processing plant, which is one part of the facilities' above-ground infrastructure. It will house the 25,000 horse power (HP) of compression required to inject the gas into and withdraw it from the reservoir. As well, it will house a dew point control facility, which removes water and heavier hydrocarbons to ensure withdrawn gas meets pipeline specifications.
The gas storage facilities will have five horizontal wells and well-sites that will connect the reservoir to a 10-kilometre (6.2-mile), 16-inch-diameter pipeline gathering and distribution system, which in turn connects to TransCanada’s Alberta System. The Edson capacity will be phased into operation over several years.
Increased gas storage capacity in the province will help natural gas customers balance seasonal and short-term supply and demand, providing increased flexibility in the supply of natural gas.
TransCanada's storage business currently provides storage services to third-party customers. It is operated separately from the regulated gas transportation business of TransCanada and its affiliates. Once the Edson facilites are complete and fully operational, TransCanada will manage approximately 100 petajoules of storage capacity in Alberta.
Did you Know?
In a commercial gas storage scheme, natural gas is injected into an underground reservoir formation for temporary storage and withdrawn from the reservoir to meet market demands. Gas storage has been utilized in Alberta and North America for many years to provide a secure supply of gas for domestic and international markets.
