> TransCanada Wins ASME Award
TransCanada has recently been recognized internationally for advances in pipeline technology.

The prestigious, first-ever Global Pipeline Award was given to TransCanada on October 19, 2005 at the 2005 Rio Pipeline Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The award was established by the Pipeline Systems Division of the America Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) International to recognize outstanding innovations and technological advances in the field of pipeline transportation. ASME is a world renowned 120,000-member professional organization focused on technical, educational and research issues of the worldwide engineering and technology community.

"TransCanada strives to be an industry leader and we are honoured to receive this award as it recognizes our insight and experience in pipeline technology," says Joe Zhou, technology leader, Pipe Engineering, who accepted the award on behalf of TransCanada.

Our Peerless Lake and Godin Lake Technology Loop Pipeline Project was rated first out of 10 applications from around the world. A number of important technologies were implemented on this project, such as X100 and X120 high-strength line pipe, advanced mechanized welding, 100 per cent mechanized ultrasonic inspection on all welds, high-performance composite coating, high-strength fitting and alternative integrity validation. All of these technologies were considered in the award.

Judgement criteria included:

  • Relevance of innovation and development to the pipeline transportation industry
  • Effectiveness in resolving industry problems
  • Impacts on the company's competitiveness, public safety and the environment

“The award recognizes more than 20 years of dedication and cooperation from all those involved on various technology projects leading up to the Peerless Lake and Godin Lake Technology Loop Pipeline Project,” says Joe.

"Proactively adopting these technologies gives us the ability to develop our pipelines faster, safer and more cost efficiently, which benefits both TransCanada and our customers," says David Chittick, manager technical support, Technology Management.

As discussed in the article titled Pipeline Technology and TransCanada in the October issue of Update, pipeline technology is important to TransCanada and our customers to ensure a cost-effective, reliable system. We also envision that utilizing this technology in future Northern Development projects will enable more cost-effective solutions.
