Key dates associated with the evolution of the NEXT Model

  • June 2004: TransCanada’s TTFP committee established the NGL Extraction Convention Task Force (NECTF). This task force reviewed the history and perceived inequities in the current convention.  Several convention alternatives were discussed, but no consensus could be reached.
  • September 2005: The NECTF filed a report with the EUB.
  • July 2006: The EUB accepted the report even though outstanding questions existed with the convention and further consideration was required.
  • December 12, 2006: The TTFP committee adopted an issue statement to consider replacing the current convention with a receipt-based model, called the NEXT (NGL Extraction) model. TransCanada applied to the EUB, under the negotiated guideline rules, for permission to negotiate with stakeholders.
  • December 18, 2006: The EUB informed TransCanada that the request to negotiate would be deferred as the Board planned to consider NGL extraction and related issues early in 2007.
  • June 4, 2007: The EUB denied the request to negotiate and announced an inquiry into matters related to NGL extraction from the common natural gas stream transported through pipeline transmission systems, the NGL Inquiry.
  • January 1, 2008: The EUB was split into the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB).
  • February 2008: NGL Inquiry, Phase 1 of the Oral Inquiry.
  • May 27, 2008: NGL Inquiry, Phase 2 of the Oral Inquiry.
