Calgary 1988: Can’t You Feel It?
It has been 20 years since the Olympic Winter Games were held in Calgary. We take a step back into the past, to remember. TransCanada’s involvement with those games included our support of the volunteer programs and a donation of a sculpture for the University of Calgary.
Many changes to the Winter Games were rolled out in Calgary in 1988. The Olympics were extended to 16 days for the first time. The Alpine events were expanded from three to five with the inclusion of the super giant slalom and the Alpine combined. Team events were added in Nordic combined and ski jumping, and speed skating was held indoors.
The Calgary Memories
Every Olympic Games has its defining moments. Who could forget “Eddie the Eagle”, Britain’s first and only ski jumper to reach the Olympic Games who taught himself to ski jump in a country that has no real snow to speak of? Adults and children came from far and wide just to see “Eddie the Eagle” fly through the skies above Alberta.
Achieving the status of legend, the Jamaican four-man bobsled team made its debut at the Calgary Winter Games. A tropical island had never sent a team to the Winter Olympics before. They warmed the hearts worldwide with a spectacular crash in its first attempt at Olympic glory. Years later the popular Walt Disney movie, "Cool Runnings" was loosely based on this team’s exploits in Calgary.
The “Battle of the Brians” was the one of the most gripping moments of the Calgary Winter Games when American, Brian Boitano, edged out Canada’s Brian Orser in men’s figure skating in an extremely close decision. Orser took a slip in his long program and it cost him the gold medal.
